The first stage of a family home. This forward-thinking dwelling is a small package with big energy, defying local architectural conventions.
Envisioned as Stage 1 of a family home in Lake Hāwea, the Tiu Studio is a dwelling designed to stand alone, built incrementally as family and budget allowed. Architect Sam Brown navigated creative and financial priorities by compromising on scale, not quality. The clever design minimises footprint while ingeniously packing in sleeping spaces for four, bathroom, kitchen, lounge, storage, and an office. Driven by high-performance goals, it meets Homestar requirements through a small footprint, minimal north glazing, utilising recycled materials, and employing innovative construction. Bucking the trend of local spec homes and large retreats, Tiu Studio is a test piece and archetype for considered, high-performance living in a compact form.
